Aquatic MICROBIOLOGY OF OCEANS AND ESTUARIES Pdf Book

Introduction: Aquatic Microbiology

This book (Aquatic microbiology) is intended to introduce students to the discipline of the Aquatic microbiology of oceans and estuaries, to aid the researcher who desires a brief resum6 of the many aspects of this microbial world and to guide him in modern trends of thought regarding the many activities of microorganisms in physical and chemical phenomena in the seas of the world. It is not intended as an exhaustive treatise. There are other publications in preparation or in the press, written by people more competent than I am, which are designed to present an up-to-date picture of the many-faceted investigations that are going on at the present time concerning microbial activity in the other three-fourths of the world we live in. When my dear friend and colleague ZOBELL wrote his textbook on Aquatic Microbiology, which appeared in 1946b, there were many who shook their heads at his presumption. When I entered the almost virgin field in 1937, it was made clear to me that I would not be able to make Aquatic microbiology a full-time study and I was expected to cover a wide range of activities including the preparation of commercial Aquatic microbiology products from material available in the Southern Hemisphere. ZoBell was merely a voice crying in the wilderness, and rather a hostile wilderness at that. For one thing, it was widely believed that microbes did not exist far below the photic zone temperatures were too low for any appreciable microbial growth and anyway pressures were too great for enzyme activity.
